The Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament Andrian Candu accused Russia of violating the norms of international law and announced the intention to collect billions of dollars from Moscow for the “occupation of Transnistria.”
Candu called Russian peacekeepers in the region “occupying” forces.
“Russian military units pose a threat to security, since this is an illegal military presence, such as the presence of the Russian army in Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Eastern Ukraine,” the speaker of the parliament said.
He also expressed the hope that the issue of “the illegal presence of Russian troops” in Transnistria will be taken up by the UN.
In 1992, a Joint Control Commission was established, consisting of soldiers from the armed forces of Moldova, the Pridnestrovian Moldovan Republic (PMR – disputed territory) and Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Later, Ukrainian military observers were also included. The current peacekeeping mechanism is a multi-state mission, backed by an international mandate. Moldova has in recent years found itself with a pro-Russian president, and an anti-Russian parliament.
