Sound Bite

A Nigerian diplomat's memoir chronicling his journey from wartime Biafra survivor to Foreign Service officer, Ambassador, and African Union Commissioner, this book covers an extraordinarily wide arc from surviving the Nigeria-Biafra War to rising through diplomatic ranks despite discrimination against Ndigbo, and finally becoming a Traditional King. This is an insider account of Nigerian politics, international diplomacy, and African affairs written for students of African history, diplomacy, and political science.

About the Book

From the chaotic dawn of the Biafran War to the corridors of global diplomacy and the throne of a traditional kingdom, Amb. Lawrence Agubuzu's Zero Hour Graduate traces one man's improbable path through Nigeria's turbulent history.

Picture this: It's 1967, and as Nigerian troops invade, University of Nigeria students like Agubuzu receive their degrees in an emergency midnight ceremony at Princess Margaret Auditorium. Dubbed “Zero Hour Graduates,” they graduate amid air raid sirens, earning Agubuzu the Ralph Bunche Prize for top Political Science student. Rejecting army enlistment at his mother's plea, he joins the civilian Civil Defence Organization, then risks everything as a BOFF intelligence officer behind enemy lines. Three near-death escapes define his war: dodging soldiers on a rain-slicked footpath across the Enugu-Onitsha road, rescuing a drowning woman from the raging Mamu River, and evading execution in Eke market when a quick-thinking local chief intervenes in Hausa.

Post-war, with just £20 in his pocket—the infamous “starvation policy” payout—Agubuzu enters Nigeria's Foreign Service amid systemic bias against Igbos. His postings read like a diplomatic thriller: Liberia, where he navigates a traffic spat with a cabinet minister's husband and handles the execution of a Nigerian who shot an Episcopal bishop; Belgium, juggling EEC negotiations during the Lomé II talks; Washington D.C., briefing U.S. War College students, witnessing loan signings at the World Bank, and managing Senate President Joseph Wayas's no-show fiasco.

Rising through ranks despite “glass ceilings” and intrigues—like Professor Gambari's sealed recall letter upon arriving as UN ambassador—Agubuzu serves as a Commissioner in Anambra State, under Navy Gov. Alison Madueke, where he tackles massive infrastructure challenges, building rural roads and banks; solves a five-thousand-stall market allocation crisis that had defeated two previous governments; and resolves chieftaincy disputes with fairness that earns him a rare degree of recognition.

Ambassador to Zambia and Malawi, then Assistant Secretary-General at the OAU/AU in Addis Ababa, he shapes NEPAD's birth and Nigeria's role in African unity. Faith threads through it all: raffle-won furniture amid eviction woes, divine timing in career salvos.

This candid memoir pulls no punches on Nigeria's Hausa-Fulani oligarchy, religious divides, and post-war vendettas, yet celebrates resilience, altruism, and unlikely triumphs. For history buffs, diplomats, or anyone grappling with survival in a “troubled country,” Agubuzu's story offers raw lessons in grit and grace.
