Hermann Hesse's Demian is one of the great coming-of-age novels of the twentieth century, a deeply personal story about a young man's struggle to find his own path in a world pulling him in opposite directions. Originally published in 1919 under the pen name of its narrator, Emil Sinclair, the book follows Sinclair from boyhood through early adulthood as he falls under the magnetic influence of a mysterious classmate named Max Demian.
