Carl Davies graduated as a Chemical Engineer from Birmingham University and trained as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. His father was a pioneering aircraft engineer and inspector. Carl Davies’s work life has taken him from western Canada to Libya, from Australia to Paris, and from Beirut to the United States, where he has been involved in various aspects of the petroleum industry and international transportation. He and his family now live in Texas.

Carl Davies makes a provocative case that some of the most notorious aviation disasters of recent decades may have far less to do with terrorism or human error than with a fundamental design flaw in the Boeing 747 itself. The central argument is that metal fatigue cracking — particularly the separation of Section 41 from the rest of the fuselage — could explain crashes that have long been attributed to other causes.

The book zeroes in on several high-profile disasters. Pan Am Flight 103, which came down over Lockerbie, Scotland, has been blamed on a Libyan bomb for decades.
