What does it actually look like to be part of France's wealthiest and most established families — the old aristocracy and haute bourgeoisie who have quietly held onto their fortunes and influence for generations? Two prominent Parisian sociologists set out to find out, conducting interviews with members of these elite circles, visiting them at home in both city residences and country estates, tracing where they send their children to school, and mapping the dense networks that bind these families together across centuries.

What emerges is a portrait that challenges a lot of assumptions about old money. Far from being simply a collection of wealthy individuals, France's grand families operate with a kind of quiet collectivism — helping each other through financial rough patches, intermarrying strategically, and maintaining socially homogeneous neighborhoods where even real estate values are protected through shared group effort. The individual success of any one family member, the authors argue, is inseparable from the deliberate social engineering of previous generations.

The book also wrestles with a bigger question about inequality. While sociologist Robert Castel's work on "disaffiliation" describes how ordinary families have lost their collective anchors — neighborhoods, unions, shared identity — the great families have preserved and expanded theirs. The contrast is stark and deeply uncomfortable.
