About the author

Albertino da Boa Morte Francisco and Nujoma Sancho Quaresma Agostinho

Albertino da Boa Morte Francisco grew up in the island nation of Sao Tome.  He earned a Licentiate Degree in Applied Mathematics and Computing and a pre-doctoral Extended Advanced Training Diploma in Management of Technology, Innovation and Knowledge, both from the University of Aveiro, in Portugal. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Management, including courses at Lancaster University as well as University Fernando Pessoa in Oporto.Nujoma Sancho Quaresma Agostinho concluded his pre-university degree in Sao Tome, where he participated in many organizations and humanitarian activities. He then earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Telecommunications and Electronics Engineering at the University of Aveiro. He is currently working toward a PhD in Information Science through the University Fernando Pessoa.Since early childhood, both men have been watching the degradation of their country by the rulers and state officials entrusted with moving the tiny nation forward. In their words, “Politics is all about society and society is the sum of individual lives. Therefore, the development of politics in society determines the nature of individuals. And the political actions in Sao Tome and Principe (STP) have done impossible things: They have turned angels into demons and princes into monsters.”This is the second edition of their work analyzing the challenges of developing adequate leadership for Sao Tome.

Sound Bite

This political treatise is a passionate portrait of the nation of Sao Tome and Principe (STP) and an analysis of the specific problems of this small island cluster, a beautiful post-colonial country which is slowly but surely being sunk by a battle of politics and perks. Charting the nation's fortunes since achieving independence from Portugal in 1975, the authors describe a leadership so corrupt and inept as to appear possessed by an evil demon.

About the Book

Very real practical problems face the islands, starting with the corruption, despotism and illegal activities of Presidents Pinto da Costa, Miguel Trovoada and Fradique de Menezes, and including the failure to properly exploit the islands' natural resources; issues of insularity in every sense); economic instability and political illiteracy, which combine to make this natural paradise a complete human misfortune. The authors resort to the symbolic image of evil souls to underscore the seemingly all-powerful force and all-encompassing harm of those who run governments for the benefit of an elite few rather than the good of all. The authors propose steps that could help establish the social conditions necessary for this defunct state to revive and flourish as a democracy.Gerhard Seibert s doctoral research work Comrades, Clients and Cousins. Colonialism, Socialism and Democratization in Sao Tome and Principe for the first time exposed and critically appraised the socio-economic and political development of the country. For its part, Exorcising Devils from the Throne focuses in the current development status of the country, providing facts and views in a contemporary philosophical perspective. Therefore, these two books can be seen as complementary to each other. There is very little other information available about this dazzling yet bedeviled part of the world which exemplifies in a nutshell the problems of the post-colonial world, including nations hit with democracy before they could prepare for it.
